Chip Seal

· Chip seal is a term used in paving industry for a process that applies a sealing layer of liquid asphalt with a layer of aggregate on top of an existing asphalt surface.. This process seals the old asphalt surface and provides a new ‘wearing’ surface.

· The process of  installing (or applying) is labor intensive and also requires a lot of machinery. The machine that applies the  liquid asphalt is known in the trade as a “distributor” . The distributer serves two purposes.  First it has a storage tank that is heated so the asphalt can be kept at high temperatures to make it flow evenly. Secondly, it has a pump and spray bar which applies the asphalt onto the roadway surface.

· The next piece of machinery is called a “chip spreader”. . Once the asphalt is applied it is covered up with a layer of stone aggregate. Then it is set in place by rolling and compaction.

· Cummings Paving has all the proper equipment to spray the asphalt in place, drop the aggregate onto the surface and then roll and compact it in place. All our equipment is TX DOT approved.
